veganism
Veganism consists of not using non-human animals in our daily lives, as follows:
- 100% vegetarian food (not eating either the dead bodies of other animals, dairy products, eggs or honey).
- Wearing clothes and accessories that do not include leather, fur, wool or silk.
- Avoiding products tested or experimented on non-human animals.
- Not visiting prisons for non-human animals, so-called zoos or aquaria.
- Having fun in our leisure time without enslaving, exploiting or using other animals (ie, not attending circuses that still use non-human animals or celebrations during which non-human animals are used for having fun).
- Avoiding attitudes that may damage non-human animals.
We are vegan for ethical reasons, for it is not fair to use and damage non-human animals. As the writer Alice Walker said,
“The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for whites or women for men”.
Let us suppose:
- Imagine that another being arrives in this planet and that he is omnivorous, like human beings (we can feed ourselves with ingredients of vegetable or animal origin, therefore we do not need to feed ourselves by using other animals, ie, we can be 100% vegetarian).
- Imagine that they see the human species as one of the thousands that inhabit this planet, and that they do not understand human languages (in the same way as we do not understand either pigs, dogs, birds or fishes' language).
- Imagine that many of them deprive us of freedom and kill us in order to eat our dead bodies cut up into pieces, despite being able to be 100% vegetarian.
Would it be fair for them to kill you when they are omnivorous and thus do not need to eat ingredients of animal origin?
- Imagine that they like human milk and, though they do not need it for their health's sake, they continue drinking it (or producing cheese or yoghurts with human milk). For this purpose, they shut the female human beings into prisons (sometimes they are named ecologic farms, just a kind of bigger prison), and they poke their vaginas to artificially inseminate them against their will with the purpose of getting them pregnant and producing the milk they would naturally use for feeding their babies.
- Imagine that, once human babies are born, they are moved away from their mothers (with the subsequent emotional pain for mothers and babies) in order to stop them from drinking the milk that's rightfully theirs.
- Imagine that babies and toddlers do not go to nursery schools but to prisons, where they are fed with water and powder lacking iron in order to cause anemia, in such a way that their flesh becomes pale and tender and, some months later, once they are fat enough, they are taken to the slaughterhouse to be killed and their dead bodies cut up into pieces to be sold as food (we must not forget that veal meat is babies' flesh).
- Imagine that, while all this happens, milk from their human mothers is stolen day after day by milking their breasts against their will. And once their breasts have given all the milk they can produce, they are inseminated again against their will to get them pregnant, stealing and killing their babies once more and, finally, stealing the milk from their breasts yet again.
- Imagine that, when the 'owner' of these female humans considers that they are not profitable anymore, he decides to take these childless mothers to the slaughterhouse to kill them at the age of 35 after a lifetime of imprisonment and torture.
Would it be fair to damage human animals for the needless purpose of eating or drinking ingredients of human-animal origin?
Would you accept for these beings to imprison people and force pregnancies on them in order to produce countless births, with the purpose of manufacturing shoes, handbags, belts and so on with their skin?
Can you imagine human animals being imprisoned and inseminated against their will in order to produce countless births, with the purpose of experimenting with them, in such a way that:
- Substances are injected into them through the soles of their feet.
- Toxic substances are introduced into their stomachs through tubes inserted through their noses or mouths.
- First degree burns are inflicted on them in order to do research.
- Their spinal cords are sectioned to make them quadriplegic and to study the quadriplegia those third beings may suffer from.
- Their vital organs are amputated and removed to benefit those third beings.
- They are vivisected (they are dissected whilst they're alive and their hearts still beat in order to see their internal organs).
- Etc.
All this against their will...
Would you accept being used as a lab tool, being experimented on, whether it could benefit those third beings or not?
Would you consider being imprisoned for life, so that they could go and stare-at and make-fun-of you at their so-called zoos and aquaria, fair?
What is unfair is not how, where or why non-human animals are exploited, damaged or killed, but the existence of exploitation and murder itself.
We can all help non-human animals, by doing such a simple thing as to stop using them. We can all be vegan. You can be vegan.
